My Fan Theory: 765874: Bloodlines — Is this a Bold New Direction for Star Trek’s Future?

I didn’t plan on writing this post here, but here it is.

In my last post, I mentioned how affected I was by watching 765874: Unification because of my memories and personal attachment to Star Trek. Today, I watched it again and saw something that made my mouth fall open.

It’s the answer to a forty-year-old question…

The answer to that question was given in a manner so subtle that you would miss it if you weren’t paying close attention.

SPOILER AHEAD!

In Unification, as Kirk walks through the paradise-like environment, he comes across those who have gone on before. He stops when he sees Saavik.

Saavik, you may remember, is from the movies — The Wrath of Khan and The Search for Spock. She is possibly half Vulcan and half Romulan. Kirstie Alley played her in The Wrath of Khan, and Robin Curtis played her in The Search for Spock, and The Voyage Home.

In The Search for Spock, a regenerated Spock is going through pon farr, the Vulcan biological necessity to mate. It’s similar, I think, to an elephant going through musth — an uncontrollable urge to mate. In TOS, pon farr was when mates were formally taken. In Amok Time, Spock was engaged to T’Pring, but they hadn’t taken their vows yet, and we all know what happened with that.

In the third movie, young Spock is going through pon farr, and Saavik says that she “helps” him. Nothing else is ever really mentioned about it, but we do see Saavik crying at the funeral.

Back to Unification

Kirk sees Saavik. She comes up to him. Behind her is a purple-cloaked Vulcan man who also steps forward. Kirk looks at him and then at her. She doesn’t really nod, and her mouth opens as if she’s going to say something. The man behind her gives a single nod.

When I watched it again this morning, I almost fell out of my chair.

That’s. Spock’s. Son.

Oh. My. Gosh!

We have Spock’s son.

To those powers that be, if by some rare chance you come upon this post, listen to me — you have a blank canvas to explore this.

This is a story of bloodlines. We have Spock, who is a descendant of T’Pau of the Vulcan High Council. This is royalty. This is hierarchy. This is … our chance to have Spock, version 2.

Potential Storylines

If we make Saavik’s part Vulcan, part Romulan heritage canon, which we can since it was done in the non-canonical books and comics, then we have a child who could have connections to high places on both Vulcan and Romulus. He is a half-breed, just like his father, who was part human and part Vulcan. Neither of Vulcan and Romulus, rejected by elements of both.

He is logical, yet within him lies the aggression of his Romulan blood. He is passionate as well as distant. Spock’s son could connect to the Federation in some way. He’d have his own story, his own trials.

Personally, I’d love to see Spock’s son having an enemies-to-lovers relationship with Nurse Chapel’s daughter that grows into marriage and involves a lot of intrigue. Not saying that the woman had any kids, but I don’t know. But we’re writers. If we want Nurse Chapel to have a daughter, then she’ll have a daughter, gosh darn it!

Besides the romance part, we could explore Romulan society more — treaties, plots, betrayals — along with emerging tech, and alien dependencies on the Romulan Empire. A truce Spock’s son brokers. I mean, WE HAVE SO MANY AVENUES TO CHOOSE FROM.

Did he have a distant relationship with Spock? Did he ever know Spock was his father? Did Spock treat him as distantly as Sarek treated him?

What about pon farr? Is there a Romulan equivalent, but instead of an urge to mate, perhaps they’re overcome with the need to be alone? How would it affect his Vulcan pon farr urges? Oh! What if Nurse Chapel’s daughter gets pregnant with Spock’s son and he goes off for a year?

Oh, there are so many things one can do with this character! These are just some ideas I had, but I’m sure other long-time fans and those familiar with the universe can come up with some great ideas.

It would require extensive writing, planning, and listening to the fan base, but in a way, we could continue Spock’s lineage. Without trying to replace an iconic character, we get a chance to see what his bloodline would look like.

So there you have it. I believe we have Spock’s son on the horizon.

Can we please get a show about him? I’d watch that in a heartbeat.

I want an unknown actor to play Spock’s son — someone on whom we have no expectations. Someone who can bring cold logic and passion to the forefront. Someone who can show the fight within Spock’s son and the larger part of the story.

A big one for me — and forgive me, I am a romance lover — he must be Nurse Chapel’s daughter love interest.

Make it a slow burn, but my gosh, I’d love that SO MUCH! I’d love for her to be in medical — you can make her an intellectual, sort of like Scully from X-Files, but with that sweetness that Nurse Chapel exhibited.

For the love of all that is right in the world, please don’t make her a “girlboss.” Her strength should be intellectual and strategic. Let her and Spock’s son be equals in mind, but give Spock’s son a more traditional bent — stronger, faster, etc. He loses nothing if he has to save her from a catastrophe, and she loses nothing if she has to outmaneuver someone to save him. Then they can bring their strengths together in some way.

All right, this went on longer than I thought, but I just wanted to put it out there.

If I’m right, Spock’s son is canon … and I want to see the rise of Spock’s lineage and boldly go there.

Yeoman Cole, signing off.
