Should writers invest creative effort in writing a series? It’s a question that has a nuanced answer to it. It’s not simply ‘yes’ or ‘no’ and then hurry up and write twelve books. It requires a thoughtful plan, process, and other considerations.

When I first started writing, I preferred to write standalone books. More and more, I find that series writing lends is own rewards and opportunities to succeed. What are the best ways to approach a series? How do you begin one? Do you work by yourself or with other authors? What about marketing? Is a series the same as a serial?
